TOPIC: Skype?

Skype? 1 year, 11 months ago #125593

My wife is on me to reduce our monthly expenses for telephone service. I would like to change over one our two landlines to Skype and use router firmware as the gateway. Is there any Skype option with Talisman or future firmwares. I realize that because Skype does NOT use SIP, Asterisk is of little or no help here.

We support prioritizing Skype and Skype-out packets in QoS. Skype uses a modified form of HTTPS, which can be tracked by the packet matching filter in the QoS implementation.

Thanks Sveasoft,

Good to know that the router will not have problems with the packets. While this may be off topic, what I really need is an inexpensive PSTN/Ethernet Skype gateway appliance that I can use with my vanilla home POTS phones here in the US. Making Skype calls from specialized phones, iPhone/Android/iPOD, or from a PC does not achieve "Wife Acceptance Factor" (WAF). My problem is that Skype does not use SIP and I am having trouble finding an appliance solution that is not hugely expensive.

Any ideas?

Skype is proprietary so you'll need to find a device the Skype folks have decided to support. There are a couple of Skype Wifi phones that have appeared from time to time. They are somewhat usable but still clunky and occasionally unreliable.

Have you tried Magicjack (www.magicjack.com)? It's not Skype but is a SIP-POTS USB adapter that allows calls to any North American phone for a flat yearly fee. The Magickjack proxy was just added to V2.11.
